Replacing the grill cloth on a speaker is a fast repair project.
Over time, all speaker grill cloth degrades. This can be for a number of reasons; usually, however, it's UV exposure and fluctuating humidity levels that take their toll. However, most speaker grill cloth is attached at the factory in the most expeditious manner possible, making it fairly easy to, if not replicate the process, mimic the steps to replace worn grill material. All it takes are some common household tools and supplies to complete the task.
Instructions
1. Cut the grill cloth to completely fit over the front of the grill frame, including one inch of overlap on the back edge of the frame.
2. Spray a light coating of spray adhesive on the front and front edges of the grill frame only. Wait 45 seconds for the adhesive to become tacky.
3. Lay the grill cloth over the front of the frame, pulling slightly to remove wrinkles. With the frame on its back, press around the edges of the frame to ensure the cloth adheres well.
4. Wait five minutes for the adhesive to set up. Flip the grill and grill cloth facedown. Fold over the top edge of the excess cloth. Apply a slight amount of pull to tighten the cloth. Staple the material an inch apart along each side to secure it to the back of the frame.
5. Fold the excess corner material flat against the back of the frame. Apply a single staple at a 45-degree angle on each corner to secure this tightly against the frame, preventing bunching at the corners. Cut off any excess above the staple with the scissors.
