Oyster tongs are the tools you use to rake fresh oysters out of the sea.
Oyster tongs are used for gathering the oysters during harvest. Gathering oysters generally just entails raking them from their beds, which you can do easily in shallow waters with a short-handled rake. However, to procure oysters from deeper waters requires proper oyster tongs, which come with handles longer than 16 feet. If someone in your life is a professional oyster farmer or enjoys gathering oysters, you can decorate oyster tongs for this person rather easily.
Instructions
1. Wrap a piece of 100-grit sandpaper around one of the handles of the tongs and run it up and down the shaft. Repeat with the other handle. Repeat this entire procedure with a piece of 220 grit sandpaper and then a sheet of 360-grit sandpaper.
2. Moisten a cloth in mineral spirits and rub it up and down the shafts of the handles, removing the dust from sanding.
3. Cover the metal teeth of the oyster tongs with a drop cloth and lay the tongs on top of an old sheet or piles of newspaper. Spray paint the handles the color of your choice, running the spray paint up and down the handles. Create a nice even coat.
4. Allow the paint to dry overnight and coat it with an additional coat, which should also be left overnight to dry.
5. Tape narrow stencils of your choice on the handles with painter's tape. For example, you can choose ivy, floral garlands and other designs and wrap the stencils around the handles. Spray paint the stencils in place with a different color of spray paint.
6. Remove the stencils and allow the paint to dry. Spray the top 10 inches of the handles with a spray adhesive. Wrap a yard of silk ribbon around this space, creating a band of ribbon at the top. Tuck in the edges of the ribbon underneath the wrapped layers of ribbon and allow them to dry overnight, sticking to the adhesive.
