Build a Box for Recessed Lighting in the Attic
The purpose of a box surrounding recessed lighting in the attic is to keep thermal insulation away from the fixtures as a fire safety precaution. Recessed fixtures that are not rated IC (for insulated ceiling) must have an air space on all sides of the fixture to allow heat to dissipate. The required space typically is 3 inches, but individual products vary; follow the manufacturer's specifications for your fixtures. As the box is merely a barrier (and it's in your attic), it can be simple and utilitarian. Often, the joists to either side of the fixture can serve as two sides of the box.
Instructions
1. Measure between the two ceiling joists flanking the fixture. Cut two pieces of 1 x lumber or 3/4-inch plywood to fit snugly between the joists. If desired to keep deep loose-fill insulation away from the fixture, make the two new boards taller than the joists, as needed, and cut two more pieces to go on top of the joists so all four sides of the box are equal in height.
2. Position one board between the joists on each side of the fixture, staying at least 3 inches away from the fixture canister (or as directed by the manufacturer).
3. Fasten the boards to the joists with coarse-thread drywall screws driven at an angle through the ends of the boards and into the joists.
4. Reposition or install insulation up to the outsides of the box. Do not drape blanket or batt insulation over the top of the box.
