Shallow Well Jet Pump Installation

Shallow well jet pump systems consist of an electric motor, an impeller (a rotor for transmitting motion) and a jet assembly. The pump, which contains the impeller and jet assembly, is located above ground -- typically in a well house or other building -- and draws water from a well or reservoir by suction.

Lift

Shallow well jet pumps are suitable for domestic and agricultural applications, but because they must work against atmospheric pressure, they are typically limited to a lift of about 18 feet. Total lift includes not only the depth of the well, but also friction losses in the lines and valves of the system.

Priming

Shallow well jet pump systems effectively use water to draw water, so they must be primed (filled with water) as part of the installation process. A check valve or foot valve is typically installed on the suction line to prevent air or other gases entering the pump and maintain prime.

Blockage

Newly installed shallow jet pump nozzles may become blocked, partially or completely, with plastic cuttings, soil or other debris. The system may still pump some water, but will not reach the pressure required to switch the pump off (cutout pressure).
