Florida Vehicle Registration Requirements

Upon registering your vehicle in Florida, you'll receive a license plate, validation sticker and proof of registration.

Registering your vehicle in Florida means you have submitted your title information and paid taxes to the state on your automobile. You will receive a license plate, validation sticker and certificate as proof of registration. As of 2010, annual fees range from $46.15 for registration of a private automobile under 2,500 lbs. or truck under 2,000 lbs. to $70.65 for a private automobile over 3,500 lbs. or truck over 3,000 lbs.

Initial Registration

If you move to, put children in public school or begin working in Florida, you must register your vehicle within 10 days. In addition to the annual fee, you will be charged $225 if this is a new registration and you have no previous vehicle registration to transfer. An additional $28 is charged for a new license plate. Original title and proof of insurance is required. If you are replacing a vehicle registration, such as when you sell a car and purchase another, this is considered a transfer of the registration and the $225 fee is waived.

Out of State

If you are not in Florida and need to register a vehicle in Florida, you must go online to the state's Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicle website and complete an application for certificate for title. Mail that, along with the appropriate license plate fee, to the applicable county tax collector or license plate authority.

Expirations

Your registration can be paid for 1 or 2 years at a time. It expires on the date of your birthday of the appropriate year. Delinquent fees are assessed starting on the 11th day of the following month. When paying the registration fee for the first time, the full amount will be assessed, regardless of when your birthday is. Florida license plates must be replaced after 10 years to guarantee reflectorization, which aids readability for law enforcement.

Renewal

Anyone can renew your registration for you, as long as they provide proof of insurance, either your current registration or renewal notice and the correct fees. If you were required to prove your eligibility for a certain registration originally, such as a disabled veteran or non-resident military, you may still have to prove your eligibility when renewing. If any of the owners of the vehicle have a suspension against their driver's license, you will not be able to renew your registration until the suspension is addressed.

Other Vehicles

For company-owned cars, registrations expire on the last day of a designated month -- June, as of 2010. Vehicles-for-hire, including leased cars, are taxed on a different scale. Registrations for mobile homes expire on the 31st of December, while those for commercial vehicles expire on the 31st of May or December. Florida has separate fees and regulations for registering mopeds and motorcycles.
