Change A Turn Signal Flasher On A Ford Expedition

Change a Turn Signal Flasher on a Ford Expedition

The Ford Expedition does not have a standard turn signal flasher, nor do any modern Ford vehicles. Instead, the flasher function is performed by the multifunction switch, located in the steering column. If the need arises to replace the flasher, you will have to replace the entire multifunction switch. The switch controls the turn signals, hazard lights and headlights. This job can be performed in less than 30 minutes by anyone with a little mechanical aptitude and some basic tools.

Instructions

1. Remove the clamshell, the semi-circular shaped trim cover that sits on the top of the steering column just in front of the steering wheel. The hazard flasher button protrudes through this piece of trim. The clamshell can be unseated by prying gently on the edges with the screwdriver. Set the clamshell aside.

2. Remove the multifunction switch retaining screw with the Philips screwdriver. The screw is located in the body of the switch, holding it to the steering column.

3. Disconnect the wiring harness from the multifunction switch by hand and lift it out of the steering column.

4. Put the replacement multifunction switch in position and reinstall the retaining screw with the Philips screwdriver. Connect the wiring harness back into the body of the multifunction switch.

5. Place the clamshell back in position, making sure the hazard flasher button protrudes through the hole and push down gently until the clamshell snaps back into position. In some model years, you may need to coax the retaining clips on the edges of the clamshell into the seats on the connecting trim panels.

6. Test the turn signals, head lights and hazard flashers before driving the Expedition.
