A List Of Top Journalism Universities In America

A newspaper

While it is hard to find a definitive and objective list of the best journalism schools in the country, a quick search around the Internet will leave you with a few of the most highly recommended programs in the country. These schools consistently come up on message boards and websites about the study of journalism and mass communication. One thing is for sure, any good journalism school will be accredited by the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications (ACEJMC).

Columbia University

Columbia's journalism program routinely comes up as one of the nation's best schools in the field. Not only is Columbia an Ivy League school, but its location in New York City, a major American media hub, provides endless opportunities for those seeking journalism internships. Faculty members at the journalism school are also contributors to The Nation, The New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, The New Yorker and PBS' Frontline. Graduates of the journalism school include Leonard Apcar, former editor in chief at NYTimes.com, Linda Winslow, executive producer of NewsHour with Jim Lehrer, and Bob Giles, curator at the Nieman Foundation for Journalism. Both faculty members and alumni have won Pulitzer Prizes for their work.

The University of Maryland

The Phillip Merrill College of Journalism at the University of Maryland was one of 12 top journalism schools selected as a partner in the prestigious Carnegie-Knight Initiative, making the school an incubator for the News21 program. The program, as the school's website notes, is often referred to as the digital Ivy League. The school also focuses on small class sizes, ensuring that students get one-on-one interaction with their professors. Faculty at the Phillip Merrill College includes former reporters for The Washington Post, The Baltimore Sun, The Kansas City Star and the Village Voice.
