Troubleshoot A Honda Tiller Gx31

The GX31 engine by Honda is a commercial grade tiller engine available in both horizontal and vertical configurations. The engine features a 1.9 cubic inch displacement capacity and weighs 7.5 pounds without fuel. Common issues such as lack of power or a failure to start are typically caused by incorrect settings or poor fuel quality.

Instructions

1. Verify that the ignition switch is not in the off position if the engine fails to start. Push the choke lever into the closed setting if the engine still fails to start. Start the engine and allow it to run until warm before moving the choke lever out of closed.

2. Hold the tiller in an upright position and look through the side of the fuel tank to verify the tiller has fuel if the engine fails to start. Refuel the engine if the reservoir is empty. If the engine still will not start drain the fuel from both the reservoir and carburetor by removing the fuel cap and pouring the fuel into a container. Depress the priming bulb, located on the side of the engine, two to three times and then drain any remaining fuel. Refill the engine with clean fuel and start the machine.

3. Pull the spark plug out of the engine using a 5/8 spark plug wrench and examine it for build-up if the engine still fails to start. Clean off any residue with a wire brush. Examine the spark plug electrode and insulator and replace the plug if damage or wear is evident. Use a spark plug gauge to verify that the plug is gapped between .024 and .028 inches. Gently bend the side electrode to re-gap if necessary before reinstalling.

4. Remove the air filter and inspect for build-up if the tiller runs but is under-powered. If dirt is evident, soak the filter in a bucket filled with soapy water, then rinse and air dry. Lubricate the filter lightly with engine oil before reinstalling.

5. Follow the engine and carburetor draining and refueling procedure if the engine still appears to be under-powered.

Tips Warnings

Allow the engine to cool before draining fuel.
