Elodea canadensis
Elodea, also called waterweed or anarchis, are perennial freshwater plants native to North America. Elodea is a desirable aquarium plant because of its bright green color and rising columnar effect. It's considered an invasive pest in some waterways. But provides habitat and nutrition for many fresh water fish and amphibians. Cultivated Elodea can be purchased for aquariums and ponds from online dealers and at many aquarium suppliers. Expect to pay a few dollars per small plant.
Instructions
1. Order Elodea online from a reputable supplier who will deliver fresh plants in water with Federal Express or some other fast delivery service, and often provide price discounts when buying in bulk.
2. Buy Elodea from a local aquarium hobby store or a pet supply store that sell fish and aquarium habitat material.
3. Acclimate your new purchase according to the instructions included with it to ensure that temperature, salinity and light exposure are adjusted gradually and don't shock the plants. You can do this by turning off the aquarium lights for 10 or 15 minutes and floating the bag with the plants in it to bring the temperature into equilibrium with the tank water.
4. Place the plants in the tank with long form tweezers or sterilized kitchen tongs. Nestle the root ball under some bed gravel or anchor with a decorative stone or two.
Tips Warnings
Elodea has been named an invasive species in the State of Oregon and banned from sale. If you reside in Oregon, online aquaria dealers are your best resource.
