Blue Flame Log Lighter

Holy Christmas, I thought I was a somewhat handy guy. But I have to admit, this lil' bit of trouble has me completely locked up. Any ideas, forum posters? As the subject indicates, I have a Blue Flame log lighter in my wood burning fireplace. Wanting to use it or possibly install gas logs at a later date, I tried to turn the valve, but lacked a key. Come to find out, the valve stem is exactly a 1/4 inch, much like a 1/4 drive socket. With a little creative tool usage, I used the back side of this socket to turn the valve, but the valve would not turn. In either direction. Regardless of the amount of torque I tried to strongarm into the valve. I'm at a loss. There's nothing special about the valve stem that I can see that would require the use of a specific key to open the dante valve. The fact is, it's stuck tight as a drum and at this juncture, I don't know what I should do besides breaking out a cold chisel and getting to work if I want fancy-schmancy gas logs or a functional log lighter. But again, I'm not an expert and this is my first home with a fireplace, so if there's anyone with an idea of what the problem may be, PLEASE let me know. Thanks! Hi Boomboom5508, Weclome to the DIY Forums. I went to the Blue Flame Log Lighter website and saw the key you refer to. Could it be possible that said key must be pushed down to release a accident prevention device? Sort of like pushing down to unlock the valve. Perhaps the actual valve control is inset and not likely to be turned with the socket. Another possibility is that the gas valve has frozen and is now inoperateble. A new gas valve can be obtained at your local Ace hardware store and comes with a new key. Approx cost of new valve is $20US Just looked at a pic of a new valve. The key seem to be approx 2 or 3 long, the housing the key fits into seems to be that long also. I would say that your socket is not long enough. Good luck and post back if you have further questions. Well, I broke down the collar surrounding the stem(the part that actually says 'Blue Flame') to give this stem a tad bit better look. And yes, it's around 2-3 inches, but yes, my makeshift valve key is fitting right square on it, there's no indicators or obvious movement OTHER than the normal operation of clockwise/counterclockwise, nor will it move that way, despite the curse words I've spoken and the derogatory comments about Blue Flame log lighter's mother. I think I'm looking at a new valve entirely here, but as it's set in the masonry work surrounding the fireplace, am I reduced to breaking out that cold chisel or is this something where the valve stem itself can be interchanged? Judging by the valve picture,it looks like its a 1 piece valve and not repairable.
