Decorate A Rustic Garden Fence

The fence material sets the basis and tone for a rustic effect.

You don't have to live in a cabin or in an English country cottage to create a rustic garden fence. You can use a rustic fence to border a home or condo in the city or suburbs. It does not depend on the location, but instead, a love and passion to create a rustic garden. Consider the fence as a way to define the garden border, similar to how a mat frames a picture. Take that a step further and view the fence as a canvas where you can display your rustic garden artistry.

Instructions

1. Repurpose scrap metal and create a rustic scarecrow planter.

Hunt for vintage items. Seek out stores that sell antiques and vintage items. These stores can be a goldmine for finding garden artifacts, such as weather vanes and antique metal advertising signs from old fruit and vegetable growers that you can add to the fence.

2. Use paint and wood stains to create a unique look for the fence.

Mix and match fencing materials and finishing. Don't limit your fencing materials to boards that are of same materials. Put in a metal rod for a missing fence board. Paint some boards and not others for a rustic variation. Leave the wood on the fence unstained to let it age with rustic dignity. Create walk paths made of stone or pavers laced with grass or ground covers.

3. Consider the shabby chic style. The shabby chic decorating style means mixing and matching different textures and materials. The design style is especially fitting to create a look for a garden fence that is rustic, inviting and engaging. The style allows you to look at things with fresh eyes. Find unique qualities in items and ways to decorate your garden fence where others only see it as shabby. When someone passes over an item at a garage sale just because the piece is a bit rusty or needs repair, see the item's inner rustic beauty.

4. Use the rustic qualities of gardening and agricultural tools to create fence artwork.

Turn garden utilities into garden art. Shop at local antique stores to search for vintage watering cans, rakes, hoes, shovels and other gardening artifacts. Use your finds to decorate the fence on the street side and on the inside.

5. Look for garden accents to make the fence local and personal. Search and seek out treasures such as an old street sign for well-known streets in town, such as Main Street. Or look for vintage signs that coincide with your name or the name of someone in your family, such as Smith Street, Adam's Alley, or Virginia Avenue.

6. Paint birdhouses in bright colors to contrast against weathered wood.

Invite nature to your garden fence. Add birdhouses and birdbaths to let feathered friends know they are welcome in your garden space.

7. Choose old-fashioned flowers and foliage to give the fence an iconic rustic look.

Plant old-fashioned flower and foliage favorites. Plant towering sunflowers to greet passersby and garden guests. Give color to the fence with climbing roses, clematis and black-eyed Susan's. Use English ivy to give the fence a rustic cottage garden effect.

8. Create a fence gate that embraces your rustic theme. Incorporate a trellis, pergola or arbor above the gate. Use the structure to plant your choice of vines and climbing flowering plants. Hang a sign from the top of the structure with your address or family name to greet and welcome all who enter the beautiful and enchanting rustic garden space that you create.
