A T1 line, also referred to a T-carrier line, is a type of broadband connection that is used to connect to the Internet. A T1 line uses a highly advanced method of transferring data with the ISP, or Internet service provider. Advantages of using a T1 line include constant speeds and highly secure connections, though a downside is that most T1 lines have very high monthly subscription charges associated with them.
Technology
A T1 line uses a specific type of telephone line that has the ability to carry more data than standard telephone phone lines. T1 lines are mostly made out of twisted copper, but as of 2010, lines made out glass fibers, also known as fiber optics, are becoming more common. Twisted copper and fiber optics allows very large amounts of data to be transferred than what you would get with a DSL (digital subscriber line) or dial-up connection that uses normal copper wires.
Price
There are two types of T1 lines that are available for purchase, namely dedicated or full T1 lines and fractional T1 lines. Dedicated T1 lines are very expensive, and can cost as much as $1000 a month. Fractional T1 lines were created to offer low speeds at a low cost, though they cost only slightly less than a full T1 line.
Speed
A dedicated or full T1 line offer speeds of up to 1.544 Mbps, or megabits per second. A fractional T1 line offers speeds starting from 128 kbps, or kilobits per second, to 768 kbps. Unlike other broadband connections such as cable and DSL, data caps are not imposed on T1 lines by the ISP. Advanced versions of the T-carrier network called T3 lines have the ability to transfer data at very high speeds of 44.736 Mbps.
Reliability
T1 lines are one of the most reliable broadband connections in the world. T1 lines offer constant speeds nearly all the time, and are not affected by factors such network traffic or distance from the ISP. Most other broadband connections such as DSL and mobile broadband suffer from speed reductions when located further away from the ISP.
