Surgical Technology Programs In Ct

Surgical technologists are members of the operating room team who are responsible for maintaining the sterility of instruments, overseeing the management of an operating room and assisting the surgeon and nurses in patient care duties. The Connecticut Assembly of Surgical Technologists notes that surgical technologists receive special training just like all other members of the operating room team. Surgical technology programs in Connecticut include training at teaching hospitals and community colleges.

Manchester Community College

Manchester Community College offers a 21-month associate's degree program in surgical technology. Course work consists of surgical technology classes, such as anatomy, physiology and operating room procedures, as well as preclinical training and off-site clinical rotations at six different hospitals in the community. Nonclinical classes include English, computer technology, psychology and public speaking courses. MCC's surgical technology program prepares students for the certification exam for surgical technology and a career in a hospital or doctor's office. Total cost for the program is about $6,000, as of March 2010, and includes tuition, fees, books and lab clothing. Prerequisites for the program include completion of a college-level biology course and an acceptable score on a college aptitude test.

Laboratory work in each interval emphasizes the lessons with hands-on practice sessions. Tuition for the program is $4,860, as of March 2010, but additional fees for books, uniforms, lab and test fees, CPR certification and malpractice insurance add an extra $1,000 to the program costs.
