MRI technologists and technicians, commonly called radiologic technologists and technicians or radiographers, are important health care professionals. They perform diagnostic imagining examinations such as a mammography, x-ray and magnetic resonance imaging on patients to help physicians diagnose and treat illnesses. There are various ways to enter the field. For instance, people can obtain a certificate, which takes approximately two years to complete. However, there are two types of MRI degrees people can pursue.
Associate's Degree
An associate's degree in magnetic resonance imaging prepares people to work as MRI technicians. The degree takes approximately two years to complete. The two-year degree provides individuals with the education and training to work in a medical setting such as a hospital or clinic -- for instance, people learn operate imagining machinery. Thus, technician classes typically include an introduction to radiology, pathology, radiographic procedures and patient care, according to Degree Directory. Individuals also learn the required skills needed. An associate's degree may include courses on medical billing, medical procedures and computer software classes.
Bachelor's Degree
A bachelor's degree in radiographic technology or magnetic resonance imaging prepares individuals to perform more complex tasks than they would if they worked as MRI technicians. For example, MRI technologists perform duties such as preparing a solution for patients to drink before they perform a fluoroscopy. The degree typically takes four years to complete. People usually take courses in radiation physics, principles of imaging medical ethics and positioning of patients. These courses may be in addition to the courses that technicians take for the two-year degree. Also, since people are seeking a four-year degree, the college or university may require them to complete liberal arts or general education courses.
Accredited Radiography Programs
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), as of 2009 there are 35 accredited bachelor degrees, 397 accredited associate degree and 213 accredited certificate radiology programs around the country. The Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology accredits the programs. These programs --- in addition to classroom instruction --- provide clinical instruction. Clinical instruction is where people, under supervision, perform MRI tech duties in medical settings.
MRI Tech Considerations
In addition to degrees, people who want to work as MRI technologists are required to obtain state licensure. The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) provides a voluntary certification for radiologic technologists, according to the BLS. The voluntary certification is based on passing an examination and completing an accredited program.
