CT radiologic techs or technicians are a type of radiologic technician who performs computer tomography scans. The requirements for the credentialing of CT technicians is the same as those for the large category of all radiologic technicians.
Background
In most states, radiologic technicians are required to become certified radiology technicians before working with patients. Certification is voluntary in the other states. Certification of radiologic technicians is obtained through the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists.
Ethical Requirements
The AART requires that technicians have good moral character and adhere to their standards of ethics. In addition, anyone with a prior conviction of a crime or who has been court-martialed does not qualify for certification.
Education
Radiologic technicians are required to have attended an accredited radiologic technology program. To be accredited, the program must cover topics that include Upper GIs, barium enemas and pediatric imaging.
Clinical Proficiency
In order to become certified, radiologic technicians must be proficient in certain clinical areas such as CPR, obtaining vital signs, instrument sterilization, and the ability to perform imaging of certain body parts such as the chest, extremities, heart, spine and abdomen.
Testing
If the candidate meets all other requirements, the final step is passing a written examination. For computer tomography, questions deal with patient care, imaging procedures, physics and instrumentation.
