Provide HIPPA consent and information forms for your patients.
The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, also known as HIPPA, regulates the distribution and use of identifying medical information among medical facilities in the United States. A client's right to privacy is federally protected by HIPPA disclosure statements that must be given to all patients before treatment. Identifying information must be kept separate from medical records to protect patient confidentiality and safety. Follow HIPPA compliance regulations to protect client confidentiality and the security of your medical practice.
Instructions
1. Protect client information by storing it in a secure database or filing it in a locked filing cabinet. HIPPA regulations require client medical information to be accessible only by those who have been trained in compliance with HIPPA regulations, so make sure that only those people have access to database or filing cabinet. As an extra precaution, you may wish to file client personal information and medical information in different locations with a client number assigned to protect confidentiality.
2. Create a contract for independent contractors that limits the distribution of client information. An example of this would be an outside laboratory that processes collected samples. Follow HIPPA regulations by requiring in the contract that all client information is disclosed only when necessary and guaranteeing it will be protected while being processed.
3. Implement training procedures to ensure all employees coming into contact with health information will properly safeguard it. Employees should be trained in proper safeguarding and distribution of client identifying information and health information.
4. Create a disclosure document for incoming patients. This document should outline all patient rights and responsibilities, as well as the rights and responsibilities of the medical care provider. Follow HIPPA compliance regulations by providing this document for all incoming new patients.
