Most of Tennessee's farms sell less than $10,000 worth or crops or livestock per year.
The average income per farm in Tennessee is more than $40,000 per year, based on figures from the Tennessee Farm Bureau. However, three-quarters of farms sold less than 25 percent of this amount in 2007, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) reports.
Tennessee Farms
The Tennessee Farm Bureau reports says that over 40 percent of Tennessee's land is farmland, with cropland representing 60 percent of that area. There are 79,000 farms in the state, ranging from 10-acre farms to farms of 5,000 acres or more. The average size of a Tennessee farm is 138 acres.
Farming Income
Gross farming income in Tennessee is more than $3.41 billion a year, with cattle and calves generating about $580 million in 2008, or about 21 percent of Tennessee's total farming revenue. Other crops generating more than $100 million in income in 2006 included cotton, soybeans and corn.
Average Farm Income
Based on the total number of farms and the overall farming income of Tennessee, you can calculate that the average Tennessee farm brings in about $43,000 per year. But the USDA's Economic Research Service reports that, in 2007, 74.8 percent of Tennessee farms had sales of less than $9,999, while 17.9 percent had sales of $10,000 to $49,000. Only 7.3 percent of farms had sales above $50,000 per year.
