Present Girl Scout badges in a creative way.
Young girls go to great lengths to earn a beloved Girl Scout badge. Ceramics, books, dance, science and folk art are just a few of the badges they can earn. As outlined on the Girl Scouts website, badges serve as a reminder of her journey and accomplishments. When the big day comes to adorn her sash with one more badge, troop leaders should ensure each girl feels valued and special for her hard work.
Cooking Ceremony
Celebrate the event with some food and camaraderie by throwing a small cooking event. Find a meal with the same number of ingredients as girls being honored. For example, if five girls are being honored, find a dish with five ingredients. Designate an ingredient of the dish to each girl being honored. One suggestion is to make pasta and in the process, talk about each girl as it relates to the ingredient. While pouring in the noodles, say something like, "Kayla had to use her noodle when she held a small fund-raiser for her church to earn this badge." Then, make a toast to the girls before eating the meal as a troop.
Community Speaker
Find a member of the community who specializes in the expertise related to the badge and ask her to make a short speech at the badge presentation. Or, ask her to write a letter to the girl wishing her luck in her pursuits related to the field. Such extra encouragement might entice the girl to continue projects or hobbies related to that line of interest, even while she pursues other badges.
Say Something Nice
Girls want to feel connected to their fellow troop members. Honor the badge earners by allowing others to share something nice about the badge recipient. Or, ask a family member or a friend to make a short speech about the girl. Ask the speech givers to explain the project and what she did to earn the badge, and to talk about aspects of her personality that contributed to her success.
Slide Show Ceremony
Ask family members to take and submit photos of the project and the process of earning the badge. Also invite them to include any humorous photos or baby pictures. Compile all of the photos into a slide show using presentation software. At the beginning of the slide show, include a clip from a popular movie or song related to the theme to pique the attention of the audience. Throughout the slides, include common Girl Scout symbols. Pass out popcorn or other movie-like treats before the presentation.
