Get Taken Off Phone Lists In Canada

Getting off call lists is relatively simple.

Canadians who wish to reduce the number of telemarketing calls they receive can register their phone or fax numbers with the National Do Not Call List (DNCL). While registration on the DNCL can greatly reduce the number of calls you receive from telemarketers, there are some types of agencies that are not covered by the DNCL. These agencies, which include charities, political parties, polling firms and any organizations with which you have done business in the past 18 months, must add your name to their own do-not-call lists if you request it.

Instructions

Online

1. Go to the DNCL website. You can find a link to this site in References.

2. Click on "Register My Number."

3. Enter your telephone number and click "Continue." You can enter any landline, cellular phone, fax or VoIP number with the DNCL.

4. Register your number. You will come to a page showing the number that you entered and asking if it is correct. If it is correct, click "Register."

By Phone

5. Use the phone line that you want added to the list to make your call. The DNCL automatically detects the number that you are calling from and adds it to the list.

6. Call the DNCL at 1-888-580-3625. If you are adding a fax number to the DNCL, send a fax from the line you want added to 1-888-362-5329.

7. Wait to hear the message confirming that your number has been added to the DNCL.

Complaints

8. Go to the DNCL website. If your number is on the DNCL list and you are still receiving calls, lodge an official complaint, which will be sent to the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC).

9. Click on "Complain About a Telemarketing Call."

10. Read the information on the Complain About a Telemarketing Call page. This page has important information about how long you have to be on the list before telemarketers must stop calling you and which agencies are still allowed to call people registered with the DNCL. If after reading this you still believe that your complaint is justified, click "Continue."

11. Fill in the information regarding your complaint. On the Information About Your Complaint Page, you must enter your number, the date of the call, and the telemarketing company's name and number.

12. Confirm that the information is correct and click "Continue."
