Anesthesiologist Technician Schools

A group of doctors working in an operating room.

The American Society of Anesthesia Technologists and Technicians defines an anesthesiology technician as one who assists an anesthesiologist before and during operations by preparing and maintaining the equipment. There is a strong demand for qualified anesthesiology technicians and, as such, numerous schools and institutions have sprouted up that train students who are interested in learning this field and applying it toward a career in the workforce.

Sanford-Brown

Sanford-Brown offers an Associate of Specialized Technology degree in Anesthesia Technology. The program is designed to equip students with the skills and knowledge needed to assist in the supervised delivery of anesthesia to patients, as well as to maintain and troubleshoot anesthesia equipment and to keep the work environment clean. The core curriculum is split into three main components: lecture, lab and clinical. The last portion of the curriculum requires students to complete a supervised term in some sort of clinical environment where they complete logs, competencies and evaluations. In addition to Atlanta, Sanford-Brown has 27 other campuses to choose from that offer this program.

Stony Brook University

Stony Brook University's Health Science department features a program where students are certified as anesthesiology technicians (Cer.AT), with coursework that provides the working knowledge needed to prepare, use and maintain clinical anesthesia equipment. Students will also learn about relevant anatomical structures, pharmacology, physiological functions of cardiopulmonary systems and legislative compliance requirements for health care institutions. Admission preference will be given to students who can demonstrate a minimum 2.5 GPA in college-level natural science coursework, as well as a strong background in courses such as biology, physiology, psychology, human anatomy or medical terminology. A history of paid or volunteer health care work is also considered.

North Seattle Community College

North Seattle Community College offers the Anesthesia Technical Services Certificate program, which is designed for students who already have experience with anesthesia technology, but wish to expand their knowledge and acquire formal certification. The 19-credit program is endorsed by the Board of the Washington State Society of Anesthesiologists and is intended to help graduates prepare for the American Society of Anesthesia Technologists and Technicians, or ASATT, national certification exam. The course curriculum includes anesthesia-related anatomy and physiology, basic pharmacology, critical care procedures, and training in anesthesia machines, medical gases and scavengers. The program is also strongly supported by several local area hospitals, such as the University of Washington Medical Center and Seattle Children's Hospital, where students will perform clinical work.
