Crime scene technicians are responsible for the documentation, collection and analysis of forensic evidence that is found at the scene of a crime. Certification as a CCSI (Certified Crime Scene Investigator) is offered through the International Association for Identification.
Types
IAI offers two types of basic certifications: Certified Crime Scene Investigator and Certified Crime Scene Analyst, with the latter title requiring more extensive training and experience.
Skillset
A Certified Crime Scene Investigator (or Technician) must be skilled in methods of documentation, collection and storage of various types of evidence such as blood, tissue, footprints, fingerprints and ballistics evidence.
Initial Training
In order qualify for initial certification as a CSI, candidates must have completed a minimum of 48 hours of approved crime scene-related coursework.
Testing
Candidates for IAI certification must pass a comprehensive certification examination as a condition of eligibility.
Benefits
Although many law enforcement agencies do not require their employees to become AIA-certified, certification can greatly enhance job prospects and advancement opportunities in the field.
