Cake Castle Decorating Ideas

Princess castle cake

Cakes can be simply elegant, awe-inspiring realistic shapes or elaborately-detailed creations. Either way, they tend to be an integral part of nearly every celebration from birthdays, weddings, baby showers, graduations, promotions, retirement and everything in between. Castle cakes can range from royal princess castles to sand castles, commemorating birthdays, weddings or any other celebration.

Tiered Cakes

For a three-dimensional castle with all the trimmings, try a tiered cake. The bottom layer can be round, square or rectangle while the higher level(s) are typically round. You can add ice cream cones to create towers. Due to the weight, use skewers or small wooden dowels to hold the cones in place. Use regular cones for the bottom and pointy sugar cones for the top part of the tower. Another option is using plastic or cardboard tubes and decorating them with icing to match the cake. Fondant can be shaped into columns or towers as well.

Use candy or icing decorations to complete the details of the castle cake. This can include marshmallows, gum drops, licorice, candy bars as doors, Starburst for windows, M&Ms and even tootsie rolls to create a "drawbridge." Edible, glittery sprinkles can be added for a sparkly effect.

For a sandy look, sprinkle brown sugar or crushed vanilla wafer cookies over the cake. Candy in beach shapes such as seashells and rocks can be added to the bottom of the cake for a more realistic look.

Sheet Cakes

If you find yourself short on time or if you aren't quite ready to tackle such a complicated cake; you can still create a castle using a basic rectangular sheet cake. You can draw a castle onto the rectangle cake using icing. Another option is to cut away portions of the cake until the cake resembles the shape of a castle. Meaning, when you look down at the cake it would look like the front of a castle.

Cake Toppers

For an even simpler option, use a castle cake topper. This can include a basic pre-decorated piece of plastic in the shape of a castle. You just bake a cake, ice the cake in one plain color and add the plastic topper. Another option is adding a three dimensional topper to the cake. For this option, at least two or three tiers may provide a more elegant look. Toppers can include crystal renditions of Cinderella's castle, plastic sand castles or brightly decorated castles. Castles can be decorated in bright, pastel colors for princess themes, or dark, heavy colors for medieval themes.
