Radiology therapists, more commonly called radiation therapists, treat patients with radiation therapy as prescribed by a radiologist. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, as of May 2009, about two-thirds of the 15,570 employed radiation therapists worked in general medical and surgical hospitals at an annual mean salary of $75,310. A few radiology therapists worked in specialty hospitals at an annual mean salary of $86,160.
Salary Range
The BLS reports that the median annual salary in general medical and surgical hospitals was $73,690, with 50 percent of radiation therapists earning between $60,010 and $89,840. Ten percent earned $49,860 or less, and 10 percent earned $105,280 or more.
Salary by Hospital Ownership
State government owned hospitals paid a mean salary of $81,400, while local government owned hospitals paid a mean of $70,420. The mean salary in privately owned hospitals was $75,800.
2010 Salary Survey
A 2010 survey by the American Society of Radiologic Technologists showed that radiology therapists in not-for-profit hospitals earned a mean salary of $82,785, while therapists in for-profit hospitals earned a mean of $74,946. Therapists in government or Veteran's Administration hospitals earned a mean of $65,623. The mean salary for all radiation therapists was $79,125.
Other Salary Data
The American Society of Radiologic Technologists survey also reported mean salaries for all radiation therapists by years of experience, ranging from $57,427 for less than two years to $88,244 for more than 30 years. The highest paying state was Delaware, at a mean of $103,785, and the lowest paying state was Iowa, at a mean of $62,579.
