MRI technicians help doctors figure out what's going on inside your body.
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technicians or technologists are specialized radiologists whose job is to capture internal images of the human body to help doctors diagnose and prevent medical problems. Nevada does not require licenses for radiologists, including MRI technicians, and it's up to your employer to decide if you are qualified. To maximize your chances of employment, however, you should fulfill the recommended training, certification and registration requirements.
Training
The training to become an MRI technician in Nevada is a two-part process that involves general training in radiologic technology followed by specialization in MRI scanning. The initial training can be done at a two-year technical college or trade school and teaches candidates about relevant topics like ultrasound technology, nuclear medicine technology and radiation therapy. An MRI training program takes between nine and 14 months and includes coursework in anatomy, physics, patient care and imaging procedures. Schools that offer radiology programs include the University of Nevada at Las Vegas, Pima Medical Institute and College of Southern Nevada.
ARRT Certification and Registration
If your program does not include American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification and registration, you'll need to complete these steps separately. AART certification and registration are often required before you can enter into an MRI training program and should be obtained upon completion of the general radiology training course. MRI Technician Certification and Registration
Most employers in Nevada require both ARRT radiologist certification and ARRT MRI technician certification, though some may require only MRI technician certification. To become MRI technician certified you must pass the ARRT's competency exam upon completion of your MRI technician training program. You should also be registered as an MRI technician through the ARRT. To maintain this registration you must follow the ARRT's standards regarding regulations, ethics and continuing education requirements.
Experience
Many employers in Nevada require MRI technicians to have at least four years of experience working in a related radiology field such as diagnostic radiology, nuclear medicine, CT or special procedures. Advanced positions, such as head MRI technician at a major hospital like St. Mary's in Reno, require years of MRI technician experience. Many MRI technician positions require additional on-the-job training once a candidate is hired for the position.
