Standardized tests play an important role in evaluating academic progress.
The Gates-MacGinitie Reading Test by Riverside Publishing is a diagnostic tool that helps teachers determine their student's reading level. This helps educators determine which students should be placed in an advanced reading class and which students need to continue working on fundamentals. However, in order to make such a decision, the results of the test must be accurate and properly attained. Thus, it is extremely important that the Gates-MacGinitie Reading Test is properly administered.
Instructions
1. Familiarize yourself with the Gates-MacGinitie Reading Test. Look over past exams and take a look at the structure of the exam. The exam is divided into two sections: a vocabulary test and a comprehension test.
2. Determine which dates you will administer the Gates-MacGinitie Reading Test to your students. The publisher recommends that the vocabulary test should be given first and the comprehension test be administered on another day. It is advised to follow publisher guidelines in order to get the best results.
3. Tell your students to come into class a little early the day of the vocabulary test. Have them space themselves out across the room and prepare for the exam. Hand out the vocabulary test and tell the students what the test will entail. Explain that this section of the exam will contain 45 questions that measure word knowledge. Do not forget to tell them that they will have 20 minutes to complete this section of the exam.
4. Collect the answer sheets from the students, once the allotted time is up, and keep them in a safe place. You can choose to begin grading the vocabulary section now or wait until the comprehension part has also been administered and grade them together.
5. Hand out the comprehension section of the exam on the day scheduled for the comprehension section of the exam. Explain to your students this section takes 35 minutes and has 48 questions and 11 passages that must read. Also let them know that this section helps determine a student's ability to read and understand various writing styles.
6. Grade both sections of the exam and compile each student's raw score. From this raw score, you can determine a variety of different metrics that will help you evaluate each student. All of this diagnostic material is provided by the publisher when purchasing the test.
