2001 buick lesabre interior fan blower intermittent malfunction

2001 Buick LeSabre interior fan blower - intermittent malfunction

Discovered my interior Heater/AC fan blower not working this past Saturday by mid-afternoon, although it had worked that morning when defrost needed. However, I tested it on Sunday morning with frost on the windshield - turned the fan on and it worked. Tried it that afternoon when the temp was about 60degrees F. and it didn't work. Not on any position (Vent, HTR, Max, BiLevel) This morning, again with frost on - it worked. I even left the fan ON when testing in the afternoon to see if that made any difference - it didn't. Only thing I haven't done is 'bang' on the blower motor housing when it doesn't work - one of the things suggested with this issue. I suspect I need a new blower motor and on checking there are new replacements listed from about $50.00 to $200.00 depending somewhat on 'brand' with 'TYC' being the cheapest and OEM DelCo replacement the most expensive. Does anyone have any experience with mid- to cheaper brands? Recommendations? I see AutoZone carries a replacement for $138.00 but that's a bit more than I want to spend on a 12 yr old car. I'm leery of gettng this from an auto salvage co. (junkyard) thinking I'd rather do it just once than twice. Another question - some of the replacement models indicate blower may come 'with' or 'without' a 'circulating tube connection for cooling the blower motor'? Any way to tell the difference without first getting the old part out? Last question - when removing the plastic housing surrounding the blower motor, there are 2 Phillips screws and looks like a couple of those snap-in type plastic lock pins plus there's an underdash light that lights the interior near the driver's accelerator foot - that I'm not sure disconnect but it seems to bind the plastic cover there as though it's connected somehow - how is that disconnected? Thanks, greynold99 I had an issue like this with one of my vehicles....turned out the stupid connector had just gotten a little loose. Pulled it off...plugged it in until it snapped into place...no more problems. Of course that was with 1 1/2 hrs of laying sideways upside down and removing the glovebox and trim to get access. Might be you have the same issue or a little corrosion. If it wasn't making a bunch of noise and occasionally works...I'd look at plugs and connections or maybe the fan control switch. Sorry...not familiar with your exact ride. As Gunguy45 mentioned, check your connections first especially look for any wire harness ground wire issues that can fail due to corrosion over time. This is a strong possibility on a 10 year old vehicle. I would go down that path before spending on a new motor, or perhaps even a resistor module, though both of those are possibilities also once grounding issues have been eliminated. Ignition switches can also be involved sometimes but usually when they fail on GM products there are other electrical failures seen also. Concur. Just had to fix blower circuit on the wrecker last weekend; had some deteriorated wires at the relay block. FWIW, I wouldn't buy the most expensive blower if it comes to that and the with or without question is pretty easy. Just look at the motor as it sits. If it is with it will have a little rubber tubing that runs from the motor to the ac ducting. Without there'll be nothing visible. Not sure about the other hardware question. As mentioned above check all the wiring and connections powering the blower. All the companies seem to be using too light of wiring for the blower motor. As to the cooling tube in the past it was common for it to be used on AC equipped cars only. The blower motor resister can cause this but usually it will operate on hi as this bypasses the reisiter. Thanks to everyone who responded, always good to be able to rely on your expert advice... However, I did the blower motor test by banging on the heater/ac duct housing above the transmission-hump and actually only had to lightly bump the plastic housing where I assume the blower motor was when the fan started right up... I'll check the electrical connection to the blower motor first when I'm able to get the plastic duct cover off just to be sure it's not something as simple as that and maybe try spraying some lubricant on the blower motor spindle for the fan cage. Maybe I'll see what the salvage yard can offer as I remembered that I got a blower motor for an old '88 Sunbird maybe 10 yrs. ago and it worked fine till I sold the car. Funny how it seems the biggest problem with working the cars nowadays is get to the thing that needs fixed... greynold99 Its always been that way.
