However, though salary varies according to specialty, doctors are among the highest-paid professions. The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that job demand will grow by 22 percent from 2008 to 2018, which is much faster than average for all professions.
General Practice
According to The PayScale Report, as of May 2010, general practitioners start with an average annual salary of $48,734 to $117,916. At one to four years of experience, they earn $61,749 to $133,746 and at five to nine years, they make $85,141 to $151,956. At 10 to 19 years, they get $99,505 to $175,343 and at 20 years or more, they receive $116,852 to $164,375.
Emergency Room
Emergency room doctors average a starting annual salary of $122,084 to $193,103. With one to four years of experience, they receive $97,251 to $202,509 and with five to nine years, they get $129,437 to $217,611. At 10 to 19 years, they make $140,456 to $244,793 and at 20 years or more, they earn $141,087 to $234,096.
Neurologist
Neurologists begin with a yearly salary of $96,474 to $195,272. They make $90,982 to $193,889 at one to four years of experience, and $120,522 to $203,976 at five to nine years. They receive $140,757 to $221,720 at 10 to 19 years and $157,223 to $243,296 for 20 or more years of experience.
Plastic Surgeon
