Archaeology Research Grants

Organizations provide archaeology research grants to academic institutions, research scholars and graduate students to preserve, promote and document historic archaeological sites. As part of funding, most recipients are required to share the results of their research at an annual archaeological conference or via publication in an archaeology-related research publication. In 2011,the amount of grant funding ranges from $1,000 to $25,000, depending on the sponsoring organization.


Archeological Institute of America (AIA)


The Archaeological Institute of America (AIA) offers research grants to members for graduate student travel, site preservation, research publication and outreach programs. The AIA Graduate Student Travel Award provides funding for a graduate student to attend the annual AIA conference to present research findings. Applications are due by December 7 of each calendar year. In 2011, the AIA Site Preservation Grant will provide up to $25,000 in funding to for projects that preserve archaeological sites while increasing public awareness and education about the importance of archaeological locations. Applications are due by February 15 of each calendar year. The Public Preparation Grant provides up to $5,000 in funding to assist researchers with the final preparation and publishing of the results of archaeological site work or research. The grant deadline is November 1 each year. AIA`s Society Outreach Grant Program provides up to $3,000 in funding to AIA member societies to support innovative outreach programs that align with the goals of AIA, support public education and outreach and promote the field of archaeology. Applications are accepted by November 1 and March 15 of each calendar year.


Cyprus American Archaeological Research Institute


The Cyprus American Archaeological Research Institute (CAARI) oversees the Anita Cecil O'Donovan Fellowship. This one-time research grant provides $1,000, as of 2011, in funding to a graduate student conducting research that examines the culture or archaeology of Cyprus. Grant recipients must use the funding to support in-residence study at CAARI, and to cover any research-related travel costs. Applicants must submit the name of their academic adviser, a project overview, statement of project activities, project budget and time line, two letters of recommendation, a listing of any required permits, a biography and curriculum vitae. Applications are due by February 1 of each calendar year.


National Science Foundation


The National Science Foundation Archaeology Program provides doctoral dissertation and research archaeology grants to senior and doctoral level archaeology students. Grant recipients can use the funding to conduct high-risk or senior-level research in an archaeology or archaeometry-related field. Grant proposal deadlines and funding amount vary depending on the grant program applied for.


The Society for Industrial Archeology


The Society for Industrial Archeology offers Industrial Heritage Preservation Grants of up to $3,000 to support the research and preservation of historic industrial sites. Non-profit, academic institutions, research scholars or individual grant applicants can apply for funding; matching funds are encouraged. Relevant projects include those that focus on increasing archaeology-related public awareness, outreach and education; use visual technologies to document historic industrial sites, or document historic sites via detailed drawings. Applications are due by March 1 of each calendar year.
