Radiologic technologists produce X-rays that are used in diagnosing medical problems.
Radiologic technologists conduct medical imaging procedures such as X-rays, computed tomography (CT), Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and mammography exams. In Indiana it's illegal to operate X-ray equipment without the proper qualifications. In Indiana radiography candidates can satisfy state certification requirements by becoming a Registered Technologist (R.T.) through the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT).
Radiography candidates seeking certification must first complete an accredited radiography program. Graduates must then pass the ARRT certification exam and obtain a radiology license from the Indiana Health Department.
Instructions
1. Attend an accredited radiography program. Columbus Regional Hospital, University of Southern Indiana and Fort Wayne School of Radiography are just a few of the accredited radiography programs located in Indiana. Graduates earn either a certificate or a degree.
2. Apply for ARRT certification. Obtain a certification handbook from your school's program director. Submit the completed application to ARRT. Once approved ARRT will notify you of your eligibility to sit for the certification exam.
3. Take the certification exam. A minimum score of 75 percent is required to pass. The computer-based exam is administered by Pearson VUE test centers. Test centers are located in several cities throughout Indiana including Terre Haute, Indianapolis, Ohio and Dayton just to name a few.
4. Apply for a radiology license with the Indiana Health Department. Submit the completed application along with the appropriate fee. As of early 2010, the fee is $60.
