Regular screenings and check-ups with a gynecologist allow a woman to keep informed on her reproductive health. When she decides to try to conceive, or has successfully done so, her care transfers to an obstetrician, a doctor who specializes in caring for women during pregnancy and childbirth. During this time, the obstetrician provides guidance and care for the expectant mother, while helping her maintain a healthy and uneventful pregnancy.
Exams and Tests
An obstetrician performs regular, standard tests and exams to monitor the various hormone, blood sugar and protein levels in a pregnant woman's blood and urine to watch for any signs of trouble for mother or baby. Additional tests and monitoring in the form of ultrasounds and blood tests help double-check any suspicious results, and provide a plan of action for dealing with possible health problems.
Consultation and Guidance
While typically a joyous time, pregnancy also carries stress and worry about the health and well-being of the baby. An obstetrician provides advice and knowledgeable guidance in regards to what foods and activities are safe, and which should be avoided. In the event of troublesome test results, the obstetrician will discuss the severity of the problem and the options available for resolution.
Diagnosis and Care Plan
Unfortunately, not every pregnancy adheres to textbook perfection. In the event of suspicious test results, an obstetrician analyzes the results and orders additional tests to confirm a suspected problem. Once discovered, the doctor identifies the problem and devises an appropriate care plan to minimize the negative effects on mother and child. This could include a dietary change, medication or other treatment options.
Pregnancy Monitoring
An obstetrician's most basic responsibility involves careful monitoring of a woman's pregnancy. This typically involves monthly, bimonthly or even weekly visits to keep tabs on her weight gain and belly size, and to answer her questions or concerns. Ultrasounds allow measurement of the baby's growth to ensure he or she grows properly and measures on target, and allows early warning of any possible defects or problems with the baby's development.
Childbirth
Near the end of pregnancy, an obstetrician discusses the expectant mother's various birth options and preferences, as well as the typical progression of labor and delivery. While in labor, the mother's progression and the baby's vital signs are monitored constantly, to watch for the first sign of distress. As birth nears, the obstetrician carefully monitors the position and movement of the baby, to determine if additional measures are necessary to aid in a safe birth for both mother and child.
