Breast Cancer Warning Signs & Symptoms

Carcinoma of the breast, commonly referred to as breast cancer, is a malignant tumor that grows in and around the tissue of the breast. Usually, breast cancer starts its growth in the milk ducts or the glands within the breast.

Early Warning Signs

The first sign of breast cancer typically is a lump in the breast or near the armpit.

Symptoms

A change in a breast's normal appearance, such as dimpling and changes in size and texture, are indications of possible breast cancer.

Diagnosis

Often a lump in the breast is detected though self examination of the breast, or by a physical examination by your physician. In many cases, breast cancer is detected though a mammogram. Additionally, a breast biopsy of the mass can determine breast cancer.

Treatment

Breast cancer is usually treated with a combination of surgery, chemotherapy drugs and radiation therapy.

Risk

If you have a family history of breast cancer, you are at a greater risk of developing breast cancer.
