Dexa scans
, or dual energy X-ray absorptiometry scans, are procedures used to measure bone density and determine the risk of osteoporosis. While there are some risks, they are minor compared to the benefits.
Procedure
In a Dexa scan, two beams of X-rays at different levels of power will be directed at your bones. By measuring the amount of X-ray energy absorbed by the bones, a doctor can determine your bone density.
Risk of Cancer
Like all X-ray procedures, Dexa scans do carry a very slight risk of causing cancer. This risk, however, is very small, especially because very little radiation is actually used in this procedure.
Risk for Pregnant Women
If there is any chance that you may be pregnant, you should consult with your doctor beforehand, because there is serious risk of harm to the child.
Complications
Because a Dexa scan is a non-invasive procedure, there are no possible complications from the Dexa scan procedure.
Bottom Line
The risks that go with a Dexa scan are very small, while the the accurate, quick and non-invasive test can be very beneficial. Dexa scans should be considered completely safe.
