X-ray technicians perform diagnostic procedures such as ultrasounds, mammograms, computerized tomography scans and magnetic resonance imaging. These technicians work with patients to administer procedures and ensure the greatest possible degree of patient comfort. Experts anticipate a high rate of demand for this field over the next several years.
Instructions
1. Find and attend a certificate- or degree-granting program in Radiography or Radiologic Technology at an accredited institution. Several schools within the Technical College System of Georgia offer these programs. In addition, the Atlanta area is home to numerous private health care colleges.
2. Complete your course of study and obtain a certificate or degree. Courses will include Radiography, Basic Medical Terminology and Computer Skills. Consider programs that include a practical or internship component, as this experience will give you an advantage when applying for a job.
3. Assemble a professional resume that includes your education and any experience you may have. If your academic scores were high, be sure to include them. If you took any special courses such as MRI or Ultrasound, include that information as well. Include any internships or hands-on practicums, volunteer work and non-industry experience that shows a strong work ethic, a record of achievement or leadership skills.
4. Distribute your resume to potential employers. Atlanta has several large hospital systems including Emory, Piedmont, Tenet and Wellstar, as well as numerous independent hospitals. Diagnostic imaging centers also hire X-ray technicians, as do urgent care facilities and some large physician practices.
5. Pass all interviews and pre-employment checks. Checks may include background checks, reference checks and, rarely, credit checks. Be sure to arrive at interviews on time and to be professional in appearance and demeanor. While you need not wear a suit, slacks or a skirt with a nice blouse are appropriate. Do not use slang when speaking. Answer questions clearly and honestly, and give the employer reasons to hire you by stressing your strengths and keeping a positive attitude.
