Train to be an ultrasound tech in Utah.
Ultrasound technicians examine patients by using reflected sound waves to take pictures of the inside of a patient's body. Ultrasound technicians can work in hospitals, private clinics or medical laboratories. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, "Employment of diagnostic medical sonographers is expected to increase by about 18 percent through 2018-faster than the average for all occupations. As the population continues to age, there will be an increasing demand for diagnostic imaging."
Instructions
1. Complete a training program to become an ultrasound tech. Weber State University in Ogden is the only school in Utah with a program for this. The school offers an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree in Radiologic Technology/Radiography and a bachelor's degree in diagnostic medical sonography. Courses include concepts in patient care, human anatomy and physiology and ultrasound physics.
2. Obtain an online degree if Weber State University is not near your home. Several online universities that offer degree programs for ultrasound technicians are Kaplan University, DeVry University and South University Online.
3. Consider certification. Not all employers require this, but it can help your job prospects.You can be certified in several different specialties such as the breast, abdomen or nervous system. No state, including Utah, requires ultrasound techs to be licensed but certification will increase your job prospects. Credentialing bodies include The American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) for cardiac and vascular specialities, the American Registry of Radiologic Technologist for breast and vascular specialties and the Cardiovascular Credentialing International for cardiac specialties.
