High school students who are forward thinking, motivated and excel in academia may wish to consider taking college classes during their high school careers; this is called post secondary education option (PSEO). Students who wish to pursue college studies in nursing can begin by completing a certified nursing assistant (CNA) training course. CNA's are trained to provide hands on care to patients to assist them with activities of daily living including feeding, dressing, bathing and taking vital signs.
Instructions
1. Talk to your high school guidance counselor to find out if your high school offers PSEO options for students wishing to pursue a CNA. If they do, find out what college's they will approve payment for and if you qualify. PSEO students have the advantage of having their high school pay for their college classes until high school graduation.
2. Talk to an admissions specialist at the college you wish to attend to learn about the policies and procedures for PSEO students. Bring a parent and fill out the necessary paperwork.
3. Make an appointment with a college counselor who specializes in the nursing classes to learn more about the program and to plan your schedule. If you plan to continue your education at the college, ask about other classes you can take in high school.
4. Enroll in the CNA program. The program consists of two parts: classroom instruction and hands-on training in a clinical setting. The program is typically between one and two months long.
5. Test out to receive certification. After you pass the classroom portion of the training, including the hands on clinical portion, you must attend a test-out. The test out is separate from the class is offered at staggered intervals throughout the year, generally once or twice per month. The test consists of a written exam and a skills exam. You must pass both parts to receive certification.
