Recovery From Kidney Cancer Surgery

After Surgery

Effects and recovery time for kidney cancer vary from patient to patient. Most patients will, however, feel tired, uncomfortable, tired and weak. There are medicines that help you through this process. Pain relief medicine can be prescribed by your doctor and can be adjusted according to your needs.

Recovery

Moving around as soon as possible is recommended. You will be given salts and nutrients through a drip until regular eating and drinking is possible. You will also be given a catheter, which is a small tube that is put into your urinary tract, and a urine collection bag. This will be removed in a few days' time. You will continue to recover in the hospital.

Going Home

Depending on what kind of kidney surgery you have had, whether it is a complete or partial removal, will probably determine how long you need to stay in the hospital. An average is between four and 10 days, although with this type of operation recovery is never rushed. Normal home activities will be hard to get back into, but it is up to your discretion as to when you feel ready.
