Decorate A Fall Parade Float

Decorate a Fall Parade Float

Parades are fun social activities for communities that usually occur around holidays and seasonal celebrations. One of the most important aspects of entering a parade is decorating the float in fun ways. Although decorating a float is limited only by the extent of your imagination, there are a few basic techniques that are common to all float projects. When decorating a fall parade float, color choice, materials and the theme are all critical components of the design. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Develop a theme for the float. The theme you decide on will dictate the colors and materials used for the remainder of the project. Some suggested fall themes are apple picking, hay rides, Halloween, scarecrows or falling leaves. There are many other options, so pick one that appeals to you.

2. Obtain a flat-bed trailer to use as the base of the parade float. Ideally, the trailer should be 12 to 16 feet long and have an attachment so that it can be pulled behind a truck or tractor.

3. Lay pieces of plywood over the top of the trailer with the edges touching. This provides a solid base on which to stand. If you plan on putting heavy items or structures onto the float, you may need to install several layers of plywood to support the weight.

4. Lay the vinyl sheeting on top of the plywood and attach it using a staple gun. Overlap the edges slightly to prevent the pieces from flying up while the float is moving. Choose a fall color for the vinyl such as green, brown, black, red, orange or tan.

5. Install fringe along the sides of the float by stapling the top edge of the fringe against the top edge of the plywood. The fringe will fall over the side of the plywood and cover the wheels and underside of the tractor. Do not allow the fringe to drag on the ground. If it is too long, simply staple it further up on the plywood until it is the correct height.

6. Place additional decorations on top of the float such as pumpkins, gourds, hay bales, hay stacks, leaves, fall flowers such as mums, scarecrows, apples and other items typically found during the fall season. Other items you can use in fall colors are balloons and streamers.
