Types Of Stocks & Equipment For A Surgical Ward

Surgical wards need to have a variety of tools and equipment on hand.

Surgical wards are where life saving procedures are completed on a near-daily basis. However, wards aren't much use without the proper stocks and equipment so that doctors and nurses can do their jobs properly. As such, it's very important that necessary supplies are kept on hand.

Tools

It's important to have the right tool for the right job, and surgery is no exception to this rule. Tools like scalpels, clamps, scissors, saws and needles (both sewing and hypodermic) are all necessities in the operating theater while it's being used for surgery. In addition to regular tools common to operations, specialty tools must also on hand for the particular surgery. For example, bone saws are required for amputations, and halo braces are needed for brain surgeries..

Disposables

There are any number of necessary, disposable materials that should be stocked in a surgical ward. Gauze and gauze pads are important for cleaning up blood and other fluids, for example, and surgical thread and staples are necessary for closing wounds that are created during surgery. Even some scalpels are disposable. Items like bandages, one-time use injection needles, IV needles, IV tubes and bags are all meant to be thrown away with all the other medical waste once they have been used.

Protection

Safety is a primary concern in a surgical ward, and it's important that protective gear and cleaning equipment for sterilization are all kept in supply. Surgical smocks and latex gloves along with surgical masks and caps are extremely important items for any surgery because they protect the patient from contamination during the procedure. Items like shoe covers and surgical screens are also required for surgical procedures and should be kept on hand in any surgical ward.
