Signs & Symptoms Of The Thyroid

Signs and symptoms of thyroid disease.

The thyroid gland is located in the front of the neck and produces hormones that regulate body energy, the body's use of other hormones and vitamins, and the growth and maturation of body tissues. When the thyroid is not working properly the body displays signs and symptoms.

Hypothyroidism

If the thyroid is not producing enough thyroid hormone, hypothyroidism occurs. The body goes into a slow-down mode when there is not enough thyroid hormone present. Women suffer from hypothyroidism more often than men, and it becomes more common as they age. Symptoms include fatigue, weakness in the muscles, constipation, weight gain or inability to lose weight, dry skin, enlarged thyroid, hair loss and swelling of the face and eyes. A laboratory test is required to determine if hypothyroidism is causing the signs and symptoms since they could also be related to other conditions.

Hyperthyroidism

When the thyroid produces too much of the hormone, hyperthyroidism is the result. The severity of signs and symptoms can be related to the amount of hormone produced and the age of the person. Signs and symptoms include irritability, weight loss or gain, tachycardia (fast heart rate), increased appetite, diarrhea, swelling in the legs or sudden paralysis, insomnia, and change in vision. As with any thyroid condition, a blood test should be done to determine if the symptoms are being caused by hyperthyroidism.

Other Thyroid Disorders

There are other disorders of the thyroid that can cause symptoms of disease. A nodule in the thyroids can indicate cancer or an overproduction of the thyroid hormone. An inflammation of the thyroid gland called thyroiditis can cause soreness in the throat and a change in hormone levels. A goiter is swelling in the thyroid gland that can also indicate a problem and should be checked.

Treatment

Treatment of thyroid disorders is important to return to a normal lifestyle. Healthy living, including eating a balanced diet, sleeping enough and exercising several times a week, helps control symptoms of thyroid disease. Medication is available for hyper- and hypothyroidism. If symptoms change or get worse it is important to contact a physician immediately.
