Education For Massage Therapy

Education for Massage Therapy

All 50 U.S. states require an educational curriculum as part of the training for a massage therapy license. Typically, states require would-be therapists to complete anywhere from 500 to 700 hours of coursework, along with other certifications.

CPR

Massage therapists must have a current cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certification, which requires periodic refresher courses so they stay up-to-date with the latest news and information.

Science

Biology, anatomy, physiology and paraphysiology courses are required to earn a massage therapy license. In most states, this takes up the largest percentage of hours of coursework.

Massage

Courses in massage theory and practice are required. After science courses, theory and practice account for the second biggest portion of course load.

Ethics and law

Therapists must complete coursework in state laws and ethical practices.

Electives

Some states require elective courses related to the field of massage but not falling into one of the previously mentioned three categories.

Other Requirements

All states require a written and/or verbal examination, as well as a minimum number of hours of supervised practice. Most states also require personal accounts of good moral behavior.
