A radiologist is a qualified doctor who specializes in the use of imaging to diagnose and treat patients.


A radiologist is a doctor who specializing in the use of imaging, such as CT, MRI and ultrasound, for the diagnosis and treatment of patients. A radiologist must have a degree in medicine and have worked as a doctor for a minimum of two years before starting specialized radiology training. There are a choice of higher education institutions in Ireland that offer courses in radiology.

The Faculty of Radiologists at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland is the country's professional academic body for radiology, providing training and postgraduate examinations. Its basic radiology training program is four years long, culminating in the Fellowship of the Faculty of Radiologists (FFR). A further year of training may be undertaken in a specialist area such as nuclear medicine, breast radiology or paediatric radiology.

The Radiology Department of the National University of Ireland (NUI) in Galway is part of the Department of Diagnostic Radiology at the University College Hospital, Galway (UCHG). At NUI students are able to take the undergraduate degree in Medicine (where radiology is studied within years three to five) and then apply for either the M. D (Doctor of Medicine) or M.M.Sc. (Master of Medical Science) Degree Course in Radiology.
