X-ray technicians must be able to work the X-ray machines and comfort patients who are nervous about undergoing an X-ray.
The first step for students who wish to enter the workforce as an X-ray technician is to complete a certificate, associate or bachelor degree program at a school accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). A number of schools fit this bill nationwide, each of which prepares students for the X-ray technician licensing exam that must be taken upon graduation.
Florida Hospital College of Health Sciences
The Florida Hospital College of Health Sciences offers a Bachelor of Science degree in Radiologic Sciences, designed to be completed on-line in 18 to 24 months, and fully accredited by the JRCERT. The program not only consists of courses focused on radiological science, terminology, technology and procedures designed to help students pass their licensing exam, but also offers students legal, marketing and finance courses to help them build their own businesses after they become licensed.
Kaplan College of North Hollywood
Kaplan College offers a Radiologic Technology program at its campus in North Hollywood. The program consists of courses in human anatomy and physiology, radiographic and medical terminology, radiation safety and X-ray procedures, and is fully accredited by the JRCERT. Upon graduation, students are prepared to take and pass the licensing examination in their particular state and enter into the radiology field as either an X-ray technician or some other radiologic technologist.
MedVance Institute
The MedVance Institute offers two JRCERT-accredited programs that apply to X-ray technicians: a Medical Basic X-ray Technician program and a Radiologic Technology program. The Medical Basic X-ray Technician program is offered at the Institute's Miami and West Palm Beach campuses and consists of courses for passing the licensing exam, which teach students the basic skills required to be an X-ray technician. The Radiologic Technology program is offered at the Institute's Baton Rouge, Fort Lauderdale, Grand Prairie, Miami, Nashville and West Palm Beach campuses, and features courses that range from anatomy and physiology, to X-ray procedures and film analysis.
Sanford-Brown Institute
The Sanford-Brown Institute offers an Associate in Applied Science in Radiography program that is fully accredited by the JRCERT at the campuses in Georgia, Ohio, Missouri, Wisconsin, Texas and Pennsylvania. The program features the usual areas of study for x-ray technicians, including anatomy, radiation safety and X-ray techniques and procedures, and each course is structured with a lecture component, lab component and a clinical application component to ensure that, upon graduation, students are fully prepared to enter the field of radiography.
