Eggs are high in "good" (HDL) and "bad" (LDL) cholesterols.
According to the American Heart Association, cholesterol is the soft waxy substance found in the fatty tissues and lipids of animals. Common foods that are high in cholesterol include chicken, beef and eggs. Cholesterol is not harmful in small amounts, but excess amounts of cholesterol can lead to heart disease by clogging your arteries.
There are two types of cholesterol, one of which is considered beneficial. Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) is the "bad" cholesterol that influences heart disease. High-density lipoprotein (HDL) is "good" cholesterol because it removes bad cholesterol and guards the heart. The Harvard School of Medicine advises people to choose healthy fats, such as omega-3 fatty acids, to improve heart health.
Ice Cream
Ice cream is very fatty and is loaded with LDL cholesterol. According to the Anne Collins website, 1/2 cup of ice cream has about 22 mg of cholesterol. This food should be consumed only in moderation because of its high fat content and cholesterol levels. Be sure to consume plenty of other foods that are more beneficial for your body and indulge your sweet tooth only on occasion.
Meat
Meats are very high in LDL cholesterol, so eat them sparingly. Pork and beef are much higher in LDL cholesterol than chicken, fish or turkey. Choose lean cuts of meat and keep your portions small. Nutritionists advise that a healthy portion of meat is about the size of a deck of cards.
Eggs
There is a huge debate about whether eggs are beneficial, because they contain high amounts of both LDL and HDL cholesterol. The HDL cholesterol counteracts the LDL cholesterol, so eggs are certainly a better choice than meat options. Eggs also contain high levels of essential fatty acids and other nutrients.
Butter
Butter is high in LDL cholesterol; margarine, however, is not a better option because it is loaded with chemicals. If you like butter, eat it in moderation or on special occasions. Butter does add flavor to foods. If you must have butter, consume high amounts of cod liver oil (or other foods that contain HDL cholesterol) and beneficial fats, such as omega-3 fatty acids.
