Considerations
There are several factors a doctor will consider before ordering an MRI with contrast. The side effects may not be worth the risk if the patient is pregnant, breast feeding or has other medical problems.
Administration
MRI contrast is administered by injecting it directly into the vein.
Common Side Effects
The following side effects may occur, but rarely require medical attention: headaches, nausea, food tasting differently, feeling a sense of warmth, flushed or coolness at the injection area.
Less Common Side Effects
The following side effects usually do not require medical attention but, if they become troublesome, call a doctor: cold-like symptoms, stomach or intestinal discomfort, pain or swelling at the injection sight, or swelling of the face, hands, lower legs or feet. Others might include fatigue, fever, anxiety or ringing in the ears.
Potential
Side effects of MRI contrast dye may be different depending on the individual. Patients may experience one, none or several of the side effects. Some people even experience side effects that are different than those listed.
Warning
The following side effects may require medical attention: unusual bruising or bleeding, extreme tiredness or weakness, changes in urination, black stools, seizures, chest pains, dizziness, wheezing, facial swelling, swelling of the tongue, throat spasms, increased heart rate, fainting, coughing up blood and hives.
