Crime scene certification requires on-the-job experience.
Crime scene investigators also are known as forensic scientists. It is their job to apply scientific methods, techniques and knowledge to the application of the law, which includes the examination of crime scenes in search of evidence. The process for getting certified as a crime scene investigator varies from country to country and from state to state. However, the International Association for Identification (IAI) sets international industry standards and those who wish to be certified will likely apply to the IAI.
Instructions
1. Determine where you want to work. If you already have a position, skip this step and Step 2. Different countries and states have different certification and hiring requirements. Some require a certain degree or series of courses before an individual can become certified; some will offer their own certification; and some even require that individuals become sworn police officers before they are certified. So, knowing where you want to work is essential.
2. Get a position with law enforcement and pursue on-the-job training. Forensic certification does not require formal education before certification can be achieved but, according to the IAI, to be certified an individual needs on-the-job experience. Law enforcement jobs, however, often will require that the individual hold some degree in a related field before being hired in the first place. Some institutions will offer on-the-job training immediately, without the requirement of any more education than high school or equivalent. If this is the case, obtain at least one year of job training.
3. Complete at least 48 hours of Crime Scene Certification Board instruction in crime scene related courses within a five-year period. The IAI requires that individuals keep their education up to date. This requires only 48 hours of instruction in a board-approved course, but this course work must be completed before certification will be issued.
4. Complete tests and professional development hours. IAI certification requires that a number of professional development hours in one of several fields be achieved, and that a test is passed with a minimum score of 75 percent.
5. Apply for certification with the IAI using online forms. Once all requirements are met, individuals can apply for a five-year certification with the IAI by filling out and submitting their application, along with a $150 fee.
