Auto Body Degrees

Keep motors running with an auto body degree.


The United States supports its millions of drivers with approximately 165,000 automotive repair shops across the country, which take in around $85 billion per year, according to the First Research industry profiling organization. Helping keep all of those cars on the road are professionals trained in auto body work. If working on cars, machinery, paint and metals interests you, a degree in auto body work may be the ideal match.


Mott Community College


Students interested in learning the auto body field may enroll in the associate degree program in auto body repair and painting offered at Mott Community College in Flint, Michigan. The two-year program includes classes in auto body welding, metal finishing, automotive fundamentals, ventilation and air conditioning, major collision, frame repair, auto body painting, suspension and alignment and automotive electrical. Students must also complete general education classes such as English composition, social science, math and information technology.


Mott charges no application fee; applicants must have a high school diploma. All students complete a placement assessment test and meet with an advisement counselor.

Craven Community College


Craven Community College provides two locations in North Carolina where students interested in auto body education may enroll for a one-year diploma program. Courses include special finishes, plastics and adhesives, painting and refinishing, auto body welding, auto body estimating, non-structural damage, structural damage, automotive detailing, basic auto electricity and suspension and steering systems. Students may also opt to complete a co-op work experience through which they get hands-on experience in a local auto body or mechanic shop. The program also requires general classes in applied communication and applied mathematics.


Students may apply and enroll at any time throughout the calendar year. A high school diploma or GED is required. All applicants complete a free placement test and meet with an academic adviser.

New England Institute of Technology


The New England Institute of Technology in Warwick, Rhode Island, offers multiple auto-related associate degree programs, including auto body technology, automotive technology and automotive collision repair technology. Courses include introduction to transportation technology, major frame and structural straightening, fundamentals of paints and refinishing equipment, automotive braking systems, fundamentals of auto body metal repair, multi-stage paint applications, suspension and steering systems, basic electricity fundamentals and plastic panel repair. Core education classes are also required.


The Institute requires an interview with an admissions officer as the first step in the application process. Candidates must have a high school diploma or GED or be in their senior year of high school and getting ready to graduate.
