They learn core medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, and handle imaging equipment including process images. Radiology aides are also known as radiology technicians. A certified radiology aide can expect to earn about $19,350 per year according to figures quoted from the Oklahoma Employment Security Commission by Meridian.
Radiology Technician Jobs
PayScale.com reported in April 2011 that radiology technicians had a national hourly rate that ranged from $11.85 to $25.87 per hour. This translates to a yearly salary ranging from $24,557 to $60,244, including bonuses and overtime. These results come from a survey of 260 respondents. Those with their certification with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) made between $15.97 and $22.15 per hour.
Years of Experience
According to the PayScale website, radiology technicians in April 2011 earned between $14.35 and $17.31 per hour in their first year in the position. When they have one to four years experience radiology technicians typically make up to $20.26 per hour. With five to nine years of experience, the hourly wage grows to up to $21.84 per hour. Those radiology technicians that have more than 20 years of experience make between $19.00 and $26.78 per hour, according to the PayScale figures.
Popular Industries
Radiology technicians are employed in a number of industries according to PayScale in its April 2011 report. Those that are employed by hospitals earn between $16.34 and $24.94 per hour and are the highest paid according to this survey. Radiology technicians involved in the health care industry make between $15.93 and $24.73 an hour, while those who are in the radiology industry have an hourly wage range between $15.41 to $23.45 per hour. Radiology technicians who work in a medical office earn from $15.16 to $23.35 an hour.
Career Path
There are three possible career paths that a radiology technician may choose, according to PayScale. One of these is to become a radiology technologist, where the annual salary range for April 2011 was between $37,424 and $52,358. Another option is to become a certified radiology x-ray technician and make from $34,413 to $51,216 annually. A third option available to the radiology technician is to become a licensed radiologic technologist and earn an annual salary between $37,241 and $51,249.
