Pharmacy technicians help customers and assist in preparing medications.
Pharmacy technicians train to assist a licensed pharmacist in measuring and preparing medications, as well as helping the customers. Academic programs prepare pharmacy technicians for entry into the field; some programs focus on the certification examination that is administered by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB), while others focus on basic skills. Certification is not required in all states, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Roane State Community College
Roane State Community College, in Harriman, Tenn., offers a two-semester pharmacy technician program. Upon completion of this program, students receive a certificate and can take the national examination for certification as a pharmacy technician; this examination is administered by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB). The program is accredited by the American Society of Health System Pharmacists and its curriculum includes courses such as Pharmacy Calculations, Pharmacology and Therapeutics, Anatomy for Pharmacy Technicians, Basics of Pharmacy, and Pharmacy Law and Ethics.
California State University East Bay
California State University at East Bay, in Hayward, Calif., holds its accreditation from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges and offers an online pharmacy technician certificate program. This program prepares students to take the national certification exam. During the clinical rotations, students will spend time in a hospital pharmacy in the IV room, inventory room and retail.
Anne Arundel Community College
Anne Arundel Community College, in Arnold, Md., offers a pharmacy technician program that holds its accreditation from the American Society of Health System Pharmacists. The program combines classroom instruction with practical training, preparing students for entry into the pharmacy field. The curriculum is designed to be completed in two terms and consists of courses such as Structure and Function of the Human Body, Anatomy and Physiology, Pharmacy Operations and Prescription Processing, and Pharmacology for Health Professions. Students complete a pharmacy practicum in the second five weeks of the second term.
