Industrial radiography certification
Industrial radiographic technicians use radiation to test various materials such as airport freight cargo. Due to the potential harm of radiation for workers and people nearby, you have to obtain certification in order to carry out your job duties effectively.
Certification Entities
Within the United Sates, nine states as well as the American Society for Nondestructive Testing Inc. offer certification as of October, 2008. The states are Alabama, Georgia, Illinois, Iowa, Louisiana, Maine, North Dakota, Oklahoma and Texas.
Time Commitment
Before you can receive certification, most states require that you spend an extensive amount of time undergoing on-the-job training. For example, Texas requires "200 hours of active participation in radioactive material operation, 120 hours of active participation in X-ray machine operations, and 320 hours of active participation in radioactive material and X-ray machine operations."
Certification Exam
In addition to on-the-job training and experience, before you can receive certification you must successfully complete the Radiation Control Program exam. The exam is offered numerous times throughout the year. Contact the state representative within the state that you desire to take the exam in by visiting the Conference of Radiation Control Program Directors website and obtaining the rep's email or phone number.
