Get Medicare Premiums and Deductibles Paid in Full
Medicare premiums are deducted from the checks of those who receive Social Security; they are not a free benefit given to retirees. The cost of premiums is high and rises yearly. Unless the recipient also buys and pays for out-of-pocket secondary insurance, it is difficult for many living on Social Security to afford to pay for benefits. Those not on Social Security get billed directly for their premiums. Since many are of low-income status, they cannot afford health insurance or drug plans. There are ways for these lower-income families (with little or no savings) to get Medicare premiums and deductibles paid in full.
Instructions
1. Know that you are not alone. Paying the premiums for Medicare out of your pocket can be difficult. For many, it becomes a choice between eating or buying health insurance.
2. Be aware that there is help for many low-income families through government programs. These are Medicaid, Qualified Medicare Beneficiary (QMB), Specified Low-Income Medicare Beneficiary (SLMB) and Qualifying Individual (QI). These programs are also available to those enrolled in an HMO or other managed care program.
3. Qualify for these programs by having a small monthly income and little or no other assets. When applying, ask if they also pay your premiums and copayments in full.
4. Ask if there are other options available. Food stamps and lowered or free drug costs might be offered. Check with the local Medicare office in your state. Each state varies, so go to the source and don't take advice given by a friend who might live in a different state.
5. Contact the State Health Insurance Program (SHIP) or Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program (HICAP). These are counseling services only, and free. They were formed to help others who need to learn more about Medicare, Medicaid and related programs. Get the number of your state office of SHIP or HICAP from the Medicare website's directory (see Resources). Tell them the state you live in, and they will point you in the right direction.
